The federal government has moved to promote the crucial role of nurses in the health system by appointing the nation's first ever chief nurse.
While Australia has had a commonwealth chief medical officer for more than two decades, there has never been a nursing equivalent.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon announced Rosemary Bryant would be appointed Australia's first chief nurse.
"As commonwealth chief nurse, Ms Bryant will be a strong voice within government on all issues relating to Australia's 200,000-strong nursing workforce," she said in a statement.
"Nurses are the backbone of Australia's health system.
"Everybody relies on nurses at some point in their lives, whether in hospitals, clinics, aged care facilities or schools."
