CHANDIGARH:Panjab University has decided to make use of a school-time practice to keep thecampus clean. While schools have prefects to keep the classes disciplined, PUplans to have 'environment prefects' to keep a tab on the campus environment. The university will be involving students as volunteers in its cleanlinessdrive.
Prof AD Ahluwalia, member of the committee constituted to initiate the cleanliness drive, said,"During a meeting of the committee we reached a consensus to involve students asvolunteers in the cleanliness drive. There will be no compulsion on the studentsas only volunteers will be appointed as environment prefects. They will beworking as leaders who will motivate others to save theenvironment."
According to theplan, three students from each department will be appointed as 'environmentvolunteers', who will be responsible for keeping the department and PU campusneat and clean. Justifying the idea, Ahluwalia said, "If these youngsters aregiven a higher and bigger duty of keeping the surroundings clean, they willautomatically be more socially responsible too. We need to build a culture inwhich each one realizes his/her responsibility towards the ecology." He furtheradded that at regular intervals different competitions would also be held toencourage students to keep the campus eco-friendly.
The first meeting of thecommittee to initiate the cleanliness drive was held on Tuesday, and was alsoattended by representatives of student parties. "We also talked aboutencouraging all residents on the campus to commute between their residence andthe departments on cycles. Why use a car if you are living on the campus itself?I have been advocating this for years," said Ahluwalia.
