The racing will include Formula 1, 2 and 3 classes, along with heats for ladies, seniors, juniors and Eurokids from the age of 12 upwards. Competitors are expected to come to Ramsgate from countries such as Belgium, Holland, Spain, Germany, France and Austria.
Cllr Roger Latchford, Thanet District Council’s cabinet member for culture and economy, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the chairman of the British Olympic Committee to Ramsgate to open this prestigious event.
“It just shows the importance of the championship in the sporting calendar.
Held at Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour Marina, the opening ceremony will take place from 4pm, with the competitors and their boats, led by the band of the 24th Royal Artillery, as they proceed from the Paragon to Pier Yard.
There will be land-based entertainment throughout the day from 10.30am today and tomorrow, including stilt walkers, lion dancers, acrobats and magicians. Bands on the main stage will include the Jazz Police, Backflash, Marylebone Jelly and the Keytones.
Tomorrow’s schedule starts at 10.45am with Euro Kids A & B, followed at 12.30pm by Ladies and juniors. At 1.20pm Formula 3 and seniors will compete and Formula 1 & 2 men will battle it out at 3pm.
The event runs until next Saturday, with four days of racing planned during the week. All race times are subject to change.
