UNESCO won't put Inca citadel Machu Picchu on its list of ......

LIMA, Peru: Peru's National Culture Institute says UNESCO has decided not to add Machu Picchu to its list of endangered World Heritage sites.

The institute says the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has decided the famed Inca citadel is not in imminent danger of being degraded. It also recognizes Peru's work to protect its top tourist destination.

The announcement in a news release Sunday comes after conservationists advising UNESCO's World Heritage Committee that landslides, fires and creeping development threaten the site.

UNESCO could not be reached to confirm the institute's statements.

Machu Picchu has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983.
