Wilson has a lot on his plate...

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2008-07-11 22:22.

"All the moves that [general manager] Cliff [Fletcher]'s making," added Wilson, "is to make our team a little bit more stable, a little bit more trustworthy from a coaching standpoint."

If that sounds like a warning to the incumbents, it probably is. Heads up, boys. Whether this group is ready for details remains to be seen.

As for Wilson, he's just got to get through the current whirlwind, between packing up in San Jose, the wedding in South Carolina, and house-hunting in Toronto. He did manage to sell his California condo, despite the Leafs-like crash in the U. S. housing market. And it wasn't an accident --Wilson had a plan.

"I'm the poster boy for location, location, location," said Wilson. "When you go in you might like some place, but in coaching you've got to have an exit strategy, because it could be anywhere from one to five years, two-and-a-half years on the average. So whatever you buy, you've got to make sure that you're in a place that you can sell. You might give up something, but you look at the big picture so you can sell your place when you hit the road."

Inevitably, Wilson will hit the road, because no coach lasts forever. But what will he accomplish here, during this strange transition period between the last five dysfunctional years -- not to be confused with the decades of bungling before that -- and the potentially dysfunctional future? Ownership, and the culture it creates, is hard for one man to change.
