Islam in classroom irks some...

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2005-10-21 11:22.

Some parents from the East Porter Township School District are up in arms, and it is only partly in a plea to a higher power.

Susan Miller said she does not like the fact that her son came home with a lot of questions about the Muslim culture and Islam.

Superintendent Nick Brown said the reason for the presentation was students were asking some Muslim students questions about why they do certain things.

“The other children were not mean; they just asked her why she wore it,” Syed said. “I never meant to hurt or offend anyone.

Deb Poxon, mother of a fifth-grade student, was incensed when she heard about the presentation and later heard rumors about the school setting aside a room twice a day for Muslims to pray. Those rumors could not be confirmed.

Another issue upsetting some parents had to do with a book that was reportedly used during the program.

Syed allegedly gave the librarian a list of three books the students could read if they were interested in learning more. Syed read one of the books on the list to the students but the library has been giving out one title to parents — the wrong title.

Brown said the problem could have been remedied ahead of time had a letter been sent to parents.
