Next steps agreed in multi-million pound library development...

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2005-10-21 11:22.

The next steps in the development of a multi-million pound library in the north-east of England have been given the go-ahead.

Members have agreed on the temporary library services that will be in place while work is carried out on Newcastle City Library.

The work will be part of a £40.2 million Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project, which will also see High Heaton Library being rebuilt.

Additional funding of £1 million has also been agreed to cover the cost of extra work.

An additional £350,000 to help pay for the cost of clearing the City Library and relocating services was also agreed.

Work on the Newcastle City Library is expected to take around two-and-a-half years.

Councillor David Faulkner, Executive Member for Culture, Heritage, Libraries and Sport at Newcastle City Council, said: "Following approval from the Executive we can now move forward with our plans for a new City Library and High Heaton Library.

"This is an exciting project which will result in outstanding new facilities for the people of Newcastle.

"Inevitably there will be some disruption while the work is carried out but we will be working with City Library users to develop the temporary services so that we can meet their needs in the best possible way."
